This is the blog for Gavin and Carrie Jones and family. We live in Papua New Guinea and are working to see lives transformed by the living Word of God through Bible translation. Gavin is a helicopter pilot. Carrie, who has her degree in Public Health, works in the lab at our busy rural clinic. Our son, Isaac, was born in 2004 and our quintuplets, Will, David, Marcie, Seth, and Grace, were born in 2012.

Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. The you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man. Trust in the Lord with all you heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight. -Proverbs 3:3-6

Gracie's surgery; pictures

Hi all,

Sorry we forgot to tell you that her PDA surgery was postponed until Wednesday. She's being moved tomorrow in preparation for the surgery. Thanks for praying for our sweet little girl! She is so tiny compared to the other babies, but she should be able to get off the ventilator once the PDA is fixed, Lord willing! Thank you for praying for her protection.

Seth's oxygen and carbon dioxide levels continue to be amazingly encouraging. Please keep the prayers coming as they try to wean him down on ventilator settings. One setting was weaned one unit successfully, praise God!

David, Will and Marcie are all doing great. Thank God the staff caught David's necrotizing enterocolitis so early, and we REALLY thank God He protected David from any more bleeding! One website I read (National Institutes of Health) said the death rate could be 25%.

Thanks again for CARING and PRAYING and even fasting - wow! Today was the best NICU day yet, I think. Last night was really hard, so after the excellent news today when I went to open my devotional it was no surprise (but still really cool) that it started off with the phrase ". . . joy comes in the morning." (Psalm 30:5)

Thanks also for the meals, cards, gifts, comments, emails, FB messages, texts, etc. You are the world's best support group, and we can really feel the uplifting the Lord provides! So even if/though we haven't written or acknowledged many of you, please know you are hugely appreciated. We thank God for you.

Love in Him,
Carrie

P.S. Poor David didn't get his picture taken today. He was sleepy and needs his rest as he is off his feeds and on antibiotics for the next several days.

Marcie's big eyes - she gained even more weight today! 2 lb 13 oz

Grace sucking her thumb! She was SO happy with her new ability, her oxygen blood saturation went up to 100%

Will's cute little bottom while Daddy diapers him (I love the chub on him now!). That's my gloved hand.

Last but never least: our much healthier little Seth for whom you've been praying so specifically!

  1. Gavin, You did such a great class on PDA. Could you explain the equipment on the babies' faces and when they are needed and when they are no longer needed. To me Will looks like he has more equipment than Seth, yet Seth is in need of much more help.
    Continuing in praise and prayer.

(Cannot honestly remember how I got to your website, but am so blessed that I have the opportunity to pray for your family, so I believe it was definitely a "God thing".)

  3. I have never written, but have been watching your posts with great interest and prayer from the first day the quints were born. And love! The way I got to know about you was from Fox News, and when we found out you were with Wycliffe, our interest heightened immensely because my husband and I have been involved with Wycliffe for many, many years. And PNG!...We have been to PNG, (Hauna Village) many times, November 2011 the most recent. My husband was instrumental in the beginning of the Hauna Village Bible School back in the late 1990's. Our church in Nebraska has just taken interest; our pastor and his wife and missions chairman and his wife, jointed us in this last November's visit and is now supporting that Bible School. I'm so glad to hear the good news this morning on your babies. God bless you as He continues to grow your faith.

  5. Gavin and Carrie, So glad that it is a good day in the nicu today. I have been praying for your precious bundles daily, especially at night. They are so beautiful! We continue to pray for them every day several times a day that they all gain more weight and can get off all their PDA and apnea masks and that they grow stronger and stronger every day. Our God is the Great Physician and they and you are in his hands. He is a mighty God! Praying for Isaac as well during all this so he is at peace with school and all the other adjusments. Also for you two, that you feel God's loving arms and for strength for both of you especially on those difficult days. Thank you so much for sharing all of this with us. Love to all of you, Debbie Sue (Mansen)

  13. Gavin and Carrie,
I know the surgeons that do the PDA ligations at children's and have worked with them in the OR during my time as a heart transplant coordinator. They are both skilled and have God's hands guiding theirs. I know Gracie will be protected because God is watching over her. Dr G or Dr F are amazing. God bless your family!!

  14. Hi, dear ones. I'm a "retired" translator (though I don't think God ever truly "retires" us - just "re-directs" us in our later years) with WBT/SIL/PNG, and Lynn Wood, whom you have no doubt met, faithfully sends prayer & praise notes from the newsgroups to a number of us who have returned to our home countries. She's been sending your updates regularly, and I've been praying for you all (including dear Isaac, and so thankful with him and with you that he's making friends and happier in his new school situation), with thanksgiving for each encouragement and stronger prayer during challenges. This will continue. Thanking Him for your testimony, and for His sustaining grace to all of you. Praying for wisdom for your medical team and for you in the "practical" areas, including ongoing financial needs, thanking God for His wonderful sufficiency shown through His people, and others, too, who we pray will come to know and acknowledge Him as their Lord and Savior as He ministers to you through them.
