quick update

Again, no news is good news (or simply no news). I didn't get home from the NICU until 9 last night. I got to hold Grace for over 2.5 hours!! So sweet - she really seemed to like it! I sure did. :)

Seth is MUCH better, praise God and thanks for praying! He's at 42% oxygen and well-expanded, although his lungs are chronically damaged (chronic being weeks or months, possibly years, to fully heal) as they have been these past few weeks. His carbon dioxide and other blood gases have been good enough to allow for oscillator weaning, for which we are grateful.

[The oscillator can be used for even several more weeks, the neonatologist said yesterday. I thought he had to get off of it, but it's just that the staff were trying to see if he could tolerate a step down to a regular ventilator in hopes they could extubate him before too long to CPAP mask (all the equipment that the healthier babies need as it delivers pressure and helps them remember to breath, but also covers their faces - all but Will's now, as he's just on the cannula - and looks WORSE than the ventilator tubes! But CPAP is a huge step in the right direction.)]

Speaking of extubating, Gracie is ready! She is on minimal settings only and is more bugged by the tube than helped, it seems at this point. Please pray for wisdom for the staff as to when they should take her off the ventilator and move her to the mask, and please pray for an excellent transition.

Grace is the size her big brother Will was when he was born! 1200 g, or two pounds ten ounces. Praise God and pray she keeps growing, please. She was hungry yesterday and got all squirrely before her feeding. :)

The other three are thriving. We are so grateful!

Pictures later . . .

Love and gratitude,
Carrie

  1. so very glad and praising God that you got to hold Grace. I can just picture her snuggled in your arms. So small, yet nestled into you, that will help her grow strong. Thanks for the good news regarding Seth, he is constantly being prayed for. God is good.

  2. Gavin and Carrie, I follow your family daily. I am mom to two precious ex premmies. One was a 32weeker, one a 28weeker. Both were quite tiny. While I hoped and prayed they would be spared the damaged to tiny lungs it wasn't in gods plans. There 6 and 4 and we still have to see pulmonary monthly, they take steroids daily and rescue inhalers daily. Each of them have parts of there lungs that are more scared then others. As far as other complications though it is the lesser of two evils. I continue to pray for your babies and family. May god bless you all.

    1. Wow, thank God that lung tissue continues to grow until they are 12 or so. I pray your little ones are completely healed along with our Seth, Lord willing. Grateful that His grace is sufficient regardless. Love, Carrie

  5. Glad to hear there is more good news than bad news! Still praying for all of you. And I do not know if this is the correct place to make a prayer request myself...but I am having severe pain and illness (probably pancreantitis or gallbladder) and since the power of prayer is working so strongly with you family I thought I would ask for a prayer from you.
    Thanks and stay strong!

  9. Your updates help us to pray, often and fervently. Our God is truly awesome...loving and good and powerful.

Women's Bible study groups here started up a couple of weeks ago, and I added the quints (and Isaac) to the group's prayer list. I could rattle off their names and individual needs as if they were MY grandkids! Now I need to take them a picture...

So much to be thankful for; your witness to God's sovereign love is powerful...love...cp (C Paaske!)
